Many would agree that conversations regarding anxiety are increasing. It is being discussed from schools to workplaces and amongst women and men. Sadly, mental health issues affect both children and adults. Social media is teeming with posts and videos of people attempting to educate others on anxiety, advocate for those who suffer, and offer community, solutions, and resources for those who are struggling emotionally. With all the attention anxiety has garnered one might ask, “Is anxiety really affecting this many people? Does it warrant this much focus?” The answer is, “Yes”.
According to the ADAA, (Anxiety & Depression Association of America) 40 million U.S. citizens suffer from an anxiety disorder. They report that women are three times as likely to experience the disorder than men. And 31.9% of adolescents between the age of 13 and 18 battle an anxiety disorder.
Working as an elementary teacher and counselor, Julie saw school-age children experiencing anxiety. As a result, she developed a passion for helping, guiding, and empowering her students (and their parents). Along the journey she discovered some effective strategies and powerful methods for managing anxiety.
Then, she decided to write a children’s book, The Warrior Backpack – for both kids and parents. Illustrated by Julie’s two daughters (ages 9 & 11), the book not only helps destigmatize anxiety disorders, it also offers four specific strategies to use when one starts to become anxious.
Julie’s efforts, however, aren’t just focused on children. During her continued work and research, she found another calling. Her website, Belly Brain, strives to educate adult women of the connection and correlation between their immune health (the belly) and their mental health (the brain). As we know, many of the issues that arise in our physical bodies, can be traced back to our food (Thanks Adina Kelman! And Dr. Brookshire!). and Julie has created a website where women can find information on how they can improve their lives by changing their dietary habits, doing more self-care, and taking part in physical activities.
Julie is yet another wonderful addition to our list of individuals who encourage us to “let go” of the old and create space in our lives for the new!
