AN INTERGENERATIONAL MOTHER/DAUGHTER CONVERSATION

Season 2

EPISODE 3:

“Vibrant Living” Series

PHOENIX RISING: A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTORY

(01:18:59)

June 30, 2021

DESCRIPTION:

Dr. Kathie Mathis, Psy.D, D.D. is a true warrior. A former victim of domestic violence, she knows the pain, suffering, fear, despair, and loneliness that accompany emotional addiction. Yet, she’s more than a survivor of a grotesquely broken marital covenant, she is a leader, an advocate, an inspiration, and a true beacon of light. Even at her lowest points, Dr. Kathie never lost hope, and never lost her faith. After escaping her situation, she found herself alone and penniless, with a six-year-old daughter to raise. As she moved through her healing process, she worked three part-time jobs to put herself through college and grad school. In the end, Dr. Kathie transformed tragedy into triumph. Her ability to see the blessings in her story allowed her to find a self-worth and self-love that ignited a passionate calling that is now saving and changing lives.

EPISODE SUMMARY:

Domestic violence is prevalent in the United States. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) states that, “on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.” During the COVID-19 pandemic those numbers increased in both developed and undeveloped countries by at least 8%.

Many people know a person represented within those statistics. We certainly do. Far too many are that person. The negative emotional, physical, and mental toll domestic violence can have on a victim is exponential. The experience can leave victims feeling depressed, lost, and unworthy – not knowing where or how to pick up the pieces. Dr. Kathie Mathis, a survivor of domestic violence herself, has dedicated herself to changing that narrative.

Having felt called by the Spirit to share her story to help other survivors, Dr. Kathie has become a prolific advocate for both male and female victims of abuse. Through her work she helps restore self-worth, self-confidence, and spiritual and emotional healing.

We found ourselves riveted by Dr. Kathie’s story, appalled by the callous treatment of her abuser, in awe of the magnitude of this global problem that affects both men and women. We are inspired by the strength and resilience of one woman’s spirit and willingness to help herself first and then others. While Dr. Kathie’s story possesses moments of unimaginable darkness, it is her light that predominates, beautifully exposing a woman who personifies purposeful, vibrant living.

IN TODAY’S CONVERSATION WE DISCUSS:

  • Notice and identify the red flags of an abuser.
  • Learn how to be an ally to a domestic violence victim/survivor.
  • Discover how blessings can be found amidst trauma.
  • Find out how to break free from a victim’s mentality.

…And, much more!
