Motherhood is one of the most incredible and gratifying jobs around. It is also one of the most challenging. Raising little humans is tough enough. Add a little internal (or external) guilt and shame, and it’s easy for moms to question their parenting abilities. The struggle of mommy guilt is real, but expert guest Jaime Mathews joins us to offer hope and help for those who are ready to “Let it Go”! (The guilt. Not the kids. 😉)

Jaime Mathews went from being joyously single to happily married–with children. Becoming an instant stepmother to her husband’s two children brought the first wave of mommy-guilt. She was soon pregnant—with twins. Add more mommy-guilt!
An entrepreneur and an otherwise grounded and powerful woman, Jaime still struggled with how the world defines a “good mother”. And, like many of us, she questioned whether she was really a good enough parent. Why didn’t her Christmas photos look like the people on social media? Should she be home more? Should she hold her children more, or should she not? Should she schedule fewer playdates or more? Was she present enough? The internalized self-flagellation and criticism, self-doubt in addition to the outward influences continued to press upon and consume Jaime for over three years.
Then, one day while looking at her reflection in the mirror, Jaime realized that she had lost sight of who she really was and recognized that it was time for a change. While her love and devotion to her children was in no way diminished, Jaime began to better care of her mental, physical, and emotional self. This not only helped her become more vibrant and joyous, it also allowed her to be available to her children in a way that nourished and benefited everyone.
Through disciplined “me time”, exercising, journaling, and devotionals, Jaime rediscovered herself, her joys, her loves, and her desires. One of her proudest accomplishments that occurred as a result of her consistent internal work and “mommy guilt” release, was the publishing of a book she had written and shelved numerous times. “Sunroofs and Shoeboxes” is all about how one can take a negative situation, flip it around, and find the joys within.
Our hope for all of you moms and moms-to-be is that you realize that while you are a mom, you’re not only a mom. Continue to love and take care of yourself, and never forget your dreams. You matter, too!
